G. Nine appeared as a new gem ROOM2K discovered and and through our journey, the artist released a new single, “red flags”. As the interview went we realized the 21 years old Korean singer is also a piece of art whose talents are coming one by one.

While studying at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology a Business Major, the artist born in August 11th 2001 dropped his latest released “red flags” and as the title hints, it’s about confessing the uncontrollable longing for someone despite their toxic traits.

Before this new R&B song, the interpreter of “stay home” has followed the same style since debut in 2019. Which has lead his fans to know what expect from him every once in awhile.

THE GOAL OF DEVELOPING NEW AND UNDERREPRESENTED ASIAN ARTIST

Having English as his second language and his preference when singing, G. Nine has established himself as a independent artist under his own label. The agency called DOWN-TO-EARTH isn’t exactly an official label but “it is more of a platform/collective that is dedicated to introducing talented but underrepresented Asian artists“, said the artist.

The label was founded by himself and his fellow friend and singer Roman Kayz. Even though at the beginning DOWN-TO-EARTH was more of an international collective of artists under a different name, there were some major changes in the team and vision. Later, it was rebranded to focus on Roman Kayz and G. Nine.

“Since we are still trying to become more established ourselves, as we grow, we are going to start introducing other artists and even recruit videographers, photographers and more to have them work with our artists to create not only great music but also content“, said G. Nine. Which makes sense since the artist edited, recorded and directed all of his music videos starting from single mary jane.

However, DOWN-TO-EARTH goal is get into a business that resembles an independent record label and develop new artists.

DIRECTING, WRITING AND SELF MARKETING

When asked about directing his own music videos, G. Nine was honest: “Of course, hiring videographers would be easier and less of a work for me but I really enjoy learning about new stuff regarding videography throughout the projects“.

Most of his ideas comes from having an image of some sort in his head when he finishes making a song. “I try to just portray it as closely as possible”, but as many we do, the singer also gets inspirations and ideas from other artists’ MVs too.

Even when his career has just started the future awaits and he hopes for “Just keep on releasing good music, collaborating with more artists, and being happy and healthy”.

“GALLERY” ON SPOTIFY AND WHY BECOMING A MUSICIAN

G. Nine started the journey on Soundcloud and the moved to Spotify when he uploaded “Rolling Stone”. But we were curious about him not uploading “gallery”, his most famous one. Sadly, since the beat of the song wasn’t originally produced by him, it won’t be released on Spotify, yet.

Big brain as he is, G. Nine looped the guitar from a song called “Smile” by Phe R.E.D.S. “if I want to release it officially, I would have to remake the whole song. But then, even if I remake it similar to the original, I think that it is extremely difficult to capture the original track’s vibe completely and people may feel distant or awkward when the new version comes out”.

How did you become a musician?

It just happened naturally I guess. Back in 2014, I randomly came across one of Bobby’s performances in Show Me The Money 3 and came to think that it would be so fun and cool if I did that too. At first, I didn’t even think of making my own music. However, after making covers of songs I like, I started to think that I could make my own songs too. Even though it was rap that got my interest in music at first, as I dug deeper experiencing a lot of genres, but R&B stuck with me the most and here I am now haha.

LIVING IN THAILAND AND WORKING WITH PRODUCER DRESS

Living in Thailand was a blessing for G. Nine: “If it wasn’t for Thailand, I wouldn’t have gotten such a broad perspective of the world, learn English, or even get interested in making music”. Of course both countries are different culturally, but in G. Nine’s heart he is thankful for both.

And he said he would love to have a presence in the Thai industry as many of his fans are from Thailand and “their support is amazing”. Since he lived for 6 years in the country because of his dad’s business, “I feel like Thailand is my 2nd home, so I would definitely love to have some presence there”.

When asked about working other artist, we couldn’t help but remember his song “i” produced by dress.

“It was such an honor for me to work with dress and a valuable experience as an artist. I almost never had a chance to work with a producer (as I just leased beats online) until I got in touch with dress. One of the A&R managers from Warner Music Korea introduced me to him. After a brief conversation, I sent him a few demos and he picked one that he liked, which was “i”. He is an amazing producer and I would love to work with him again in the future if possible.

Producers and singers comes hand on hand, but G. Nine haven’t met that many people because he is a shy person. However, he did reach to producer FNDGuitar who now is in charge of all his songs. “He knows exactly what I want when it comes to making a song. In fact, my most recent release “red flags” is also produced by him”.

Even when the fame haven’t come yet, he had a few students back in High School who recognized him: “If a fan recognizes me in public, I think I would be surprised at first but also thankful at the same time and talk with them very briefly or something like that. But I’m an introvert so it might be very awkward, but I’ll try not to be haha”, he promises.
